July 2016 – Cancer Research UK

Our sixth charity run, organised by Ellen Williams, was 16 July 2016. Ellen was raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Ellen said “I started fundraising for Cancer Research UK in 2012. My cousin was diagnosed with Cancer and sadly later lost her battle. The more I thought about it the more I realised that if you haven’t been affected by cancer or you don’t know someone who has been affected by Cancer then you are sadly in the minority. I decided I wanted to do my bit to help beat this vile and heart-breaking disease. I set my heart on raising £10’000. I wanted to swim the English Channel. I was a swimmer rather than a runner. Now I am 2/3’s of a triathlete, I don’t know how I feel about that! But anyway the dream was set. I am a firm believer that failure to prepare leads directly to failure. My first ‘training swim’ was an attempt at a 6 hour swim at Sandwell Valley, I managed 4 hours, I swam 6 miles. I was ecstatic! That day I met the people that shaped my plans thereafter. I realised it wasn’t a case of ploughing up and down the swimming pool then jumping into the English Channel. The Channel is a beast and she DESERVES respect. So I embarked on my training journey. However I didn’t want to side-line the fundraising so I started doing lots of different things. Last year (2015) I organised my first virtual run and it was a resounding success.

This year Chasewater Runners very kindly allowed me to host a second run. I was blown away by the support again – especially as I am constantly plugging some fundraising ambition or another. The run is open until the end of the month so final totals aren’t in just yet but so far I have already raised £185. Thank you so much to everyone that took part, I appreciate your support and kind words more than I can ever express! Through the support of Chasewater Runners I have smashed through my £10’000 target; prior to adding on the money from this charity run I have raised £10’434.
